Happy Pie Day
Happy Pi day!! ICA’s math department did a phenomenal job helping us all to cultivate a deeper learning of math!
Here is some context from our wonderful Math Department head, Mr. Kingston: Russell Chien demonstrated he knew 143 digits of pi from memory (done at assemble before playing the Math Wars video).
Some students learned the history of pi from 1 decimal 4000 years ago to 100 trillion decimals today.
Some explored methods for calculating pi through: finding circular objects around campus and finding the ratio of circumference to diameter, recreating Archimedes’ method for calculating pi with the aid of spreadsheets, and deriving why e^(πi)+1=0 (voted the most beautiful equation ever). Other students completed pi-related puzzles, word searches, etc.
Some competed to memorize digits of pi with pizza as a reward. Overall, we all learned how important math can be through real application and have a deeper appreciation of circular objects like pizza and tiny pies
